Where We Come From

The EARLY Church

The Mount Chapel Missionary Baptist Church was organized under a brush harbor in the year of 1865 under the Pastorate of Reverend Burrell York and sixteen members.

The Faithful Founders were:

Sister Ros Hughes                       Sister Murell Foster

Sister Hattie Wheeler                   Sister Lou York

Brother Jeff Allen                         Sister Mittie Allen

Sister Hettie Bennett                    Sister Lou Venia Nash
Brother Squar Spencer                Brother Sam Bass
Brother James Jackson, Sr.         Brother D. D. Minter
Sister Charity Walls                      Sister Mary Hopkins

Throughout Mount Chapel's history six churches has been erected. The first Church was built under the administration of Reverend Burrell York in the year of 1870. The second Church was erected under the administration of Reverend North Venson in the year of 1880. The third Church was erected under the administration of Reverend Charlie Shelton in the year of 1890. The fourth Church was also erected under the administration of Reverend Shelton. This Church was destroyed by fire originated from lightening. After this Church was destroyed the congregation assembled in the public building in Mooretown. They worshiped in this building for two years. The fifth Church was erected in 1923 under the administration of Reverend J. R. Martin. The sixth Church which is the present Church was erected under the administration of Reverend Walter A. Jones 1955.

Since the organization of the Mount Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in 1865, the pastors have been as follows:

Rev. Burrell York -10 years            Rev. J. R. Martin - 6 years

Rev. North Venson - 14 years       Rev. Kelly Key - 9 years

Rev. Charlie Shelton - 3 years      Rev. L. H. Houghton - 3 years

Rev. Robert Taylor - 3 years         Rev. Louis Kochinsky - 3 years

Rev. Bryant Benton - 3 years        Rev. Walter A. Jones - 38 years

Rev. Monroe Claibon - 4 years     Rev. Clarence Rice - 38 + years

In the month of September 1954 The Mount Chapel Missionary Baptist Church was under construction. The building was constructed by Mr. Hart Maxie of Frierson, LA, and the blue print was drawn by Deacon Samuel Clayton, Deacon Alfred Lee and Deacon A. D. Bowman of the Mount Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. In January of 2001, under the leadership of Pastor Clarence Rice, Mount Chapel purchased land on Broadway with ongoing plans to erect another church in the near future. With God's blessings we presently have blue prints being drawn of our new sanctuary; and are now in the planning stage of building.

We thank GOD for the many faithful members that are now gone on that prayed for this local body to continue on, and we pray that we continue to have that same prayer of continuance and love for one another.
